Professor Marc de Smet
I was born in Canada, where I completed my studies. First a BSc(hon) in Chemistry at the University of Ottawa, followed by medicine at McGill U in Montreal, and Ophthalmology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver under the guidance of Stephen Drance.
Followed 8 years at the NEI in Bethesda MD where I ended as the Chief of the Clinical Immunology Service. I also did a 1 year fellowship at the Wilmer Eye Institute in Vitreo-retinal surgery in Baltimore.

Next followed more than 10 years I was professor and head of the department of Ophthalmology at the University of Amsterdam. I have now moved to Lausanne Switzerland where I founded and am director of the center for microinvasive eye surgery (MIOS sa).
I am the Chief medical officer of Preceyes the first robotics company in ophthalmology.
I have many research interests from basic mechanisms in uveitis, the treatment both medical and surgical of patients with ocular inflammation and vitreo-retinal diseases, imaging with OCT and autofluorescence. We have also been involved in assessing and developing approaches in vitreo-retinal surgery, from vitreolysis to the creation of a robotic system for vitreoretinal surgery in conjunction with the Department of biomechanical engineering of the University of Eindhoven. In partnership with the School of Engineering and Management of Yverdon Switzerland and the University of Delft, we have started to develop the next generation endoscope for Eye surgery. We were among the first to use transverse scanning in OCT.
From a pharmaceutical standpoint, I was one of the original investigators for the use of microplasmin (now Jetrea) in eyes. I also was the first to inject methotrexate intraocularly for the treatment of lymphomas, and tb, the first to use a combination of intravitreal foscarnet/ganciclovir in the treatment of sight threatening CMV retinitis.
I am member of many professional societies in Uveitis and Retina. I am on the editorial board of a number of ophthalmic journals and PLOS One. Treasurer of the International Uveitis Study Group (IUSG). I am a member of the Jules Gonin Club, Macula Society, In term of publications, I have over 175 publications in peer review journals, 22 book chapters, over 300 invited lectures.
